some binding tips

At the last meeting of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild, I shared some tips about how I join my binding strips, and how I do my machine applied binding. Because it is really hard to show such small fine detailed work to a large group, I said I'd do up a blog post to show my methods. Today I'm sharing the first one.

BINDING TIPS
I was shown this method of how to join my binding about 5 years ago and I love it. I hate trimming dog ears after stitching, and with this method, there are none to trim. This technique works with any width binding and for straight cut or bias binding.

1. Start with 2 pieces of binding that need to be joined.
2. Place them both right sides up, lined up on your cutting board.
layer
3. Taking your ruler that has a 45° angle marked on it, line the 45° line up with the bottom of the binding strips. Adjust the ruler on the right hand side so that the ¼” marking and the 45° line meet right at the corner of the binding pieces.

4. Cut

5. Separate your pieces and turn the top piece so they look like this.
the ends
6. Take the right piece and place it face down on the left piece, lining up the cut edges like so:

7. Using a ¼” seam, sew them together

8. Set your seam and then press them open and
tada
TA DA! NO DOG EARS TO TRIM!

 Happy quilting!

Hey I like the idea of no dog ears to trim. Will have to try this next time I need to bind. BTW will this also work for directional prints?

Cool! I am too lazy to trim dog ears on my binding, but I'll definitely try this method soon - have some placemats waiting for their binding! Thanks for sharing!

Hey! I would like to award you the Liebster Blog Award for your blog. The Liebster Blog award is presented to blogs that the presenter believes should be recognized. It is given to "small blogs" - those with fewer than 200 followers. Check out my blog for more details. Congratulations! :)
