8 of us were showing 27 participants our methods for doing applique. We had 4 people demoing various hand applique methods and 4 or us doing machine applique methods.
My applique method of choice is raw edge, so I explained my process of developing a quilt from design concept through to finished quilt. As I don't like to waste time, doing raw edge applique leads to being able to stitch the applique down as some of my quilting. Of course, I love doing free motion quilting, these days, so I kinda got carried away, and my sample ended up being as much about the quilting as the applique!
My biggest surprise was that so many of the particiapnts in the sessions had thought of raw edge applique as being complex and difficult - I think I've made a few converts this weekend! Every report I heard was that the weekend was a great success.
It was a very interesting concept - each of the mentors designed either a flower or the vase, and then we worked round robin style with all of us working on the same sample top, each in our own technique, and then we each worked on a sample in our own preferred method, using each other's designs. This resulted in a great variety of samples showing everyone's technique, and the effect using different colours and layouts can have.
Here are the samples made up by some of the other mentors

It was a lot of fun, but boy am I tired now! Hope you had a great weekend!

what a fabulous weekend. I am one of those who think it difficult. oh I do need to move to Canada don't I lol. or maybe a one year sabbitical.
What fantastic work - your colour selection is wonderful. I am always a bit nervous about raw edge applique - I love the way you have done it.
Wish I could have been there. Your applique is just beautiful. The sample is amazing with all your wonderful quilting.
We 'did' have a wonderful weekend. I heard from many as well that applique was not as scarey as they had thought it to be. I think we all have given them some thing to think about and I think we have converted some. It was a great time with great people and I too am very tired Janet. Your sampler is so wonderful and I think I need to take some lessons from you on machine quilting.Well done.

That is a fantastic workshop model and I can't wait to talk to you about it more. I love the idea of fellow guild members mentoring within their own guild. Your sample is a show worthy quilt!!! I just love how you made the vase shadow with the mini stippling. Stunning!
It was great fun wasn't it! We must do it again!
I think that I must have the wrong idea as to what raw edge quilting is. Using the stitching the applique down as part of the quilting very much piques my interest. Your quilting is beautiful!!
Sounds like you had a fantastic weekend. I think the quilting actually makes the applique stand out even more.
They all turned out wonderful. Love your quilting and the raw edge applique.
The quilting on your sample is simply beautiful! I'm new to free motion quilting, and this is nice and inspirational for me ~ thanks!!
