In this case, it really is a carry-on!
I decided yesterday that I needed a new carry-on bag for our upcoming vacation. Seeing as I'm working for the next couple of days, and then leaving basically from work to catch our flight, I had to get this made today.
While I had decided I wanted a duffel bag, and had a pretty good idea of how I was going to make it, I still did a little browsing last night and came across this site http://www.sewingsupport.com/sewing-how-to/free-patterns-and-projects/bags/duffel-bags.html - 16 different duffel bag patterns. Lots of ideas, but this is the one that was closest to what I was looking for, so it became my starting point. http://www.familyeverafterblog.com/2012/03/dance-duffle-ruffle-bag-tutorial.html, although ruffles and dance are not my thing :)
Awhile back I acquired some linen remnants, which I decided would be perfect for my needs. This morning when I was out running some errands, it hit me - I should use that polka dot linen and the red linen I used in my disappearing 4 patch with a twist tutorial just to add a bit of interest to the bag.
Now, if I didn't take my usual quilting approach, this bag would have taken me about 3 hours to make. But, since I don't do anything the straight forward way, I did do my usual quilting - in this case a few feathers with matchstick quilting,
some divide and conquer, playing with different fills - some crosshatch, some pebbles, a little McTavishing - you get the idea.
About 3 hours worth of free motion quilting on my domestic machine, but I think it was totally worth it. I used fusible fleece, and then after quilting I ironed on a woven interfacing, in lieu of doing a separate lining (lack of time!) Some cotton webbing, a repurposed belt buckle and I have a new carry-on, which is far more attractive than my old one!
This was a fun project to work on, and I enjoyed the freedom of not worrying about what goes where with the quilting - I decided as I reached each spot. While not a large duffel - finished size is about 8"x8"x16", it will be perfect as a carry-on with a few necessities - book and EPP diamonds to keep me occupied - and a snack or two!

You quilting just blows me away! maybe in 20-3- years I will come 1/10 as good as you. You have inspired me to head off to my next WIP which is to be machine quilted.
